The drive comes pre-formatted to using exFAT, so it will work with both PCs and Macs. If you don’t plan on switching between OS’s you can format it as you please.
Included with the hardware is “LaCie Toolkit,” via download, the aforementioned five year warranty and five years of Rescue Data Recovery Service. After the installation when ToolKit loads you will be given the option to reformat the drive, if you defer this option you will have to do it via your OS later. The ToolKit includes backup and restore, mirroring which are both part of the Seagate Sync Plus App. Mirroring allows you to specify the folder you would like the portable drive to sync with on your computer, it is done automatically whenever you edit or move files. The Backup and Restore tools let you choose full or partial backups to run continuously, one time only, hourly, daily, weekly or monthly(Windows Only.) LaCie assumes if you use a Mac that you are utilizing Time Machine for backups.
