Using HID Proximity card technology has kept our business safe and secure for the last few years. It offers exactly what we need as a business to securely control and access our facilities. I want to take some time to talk to you about the different types of HID proximity devises and discuss their similarities and differences.

HID proximity cards can be an integral part of any secure facility. It allows for controlled access for employees and the ability to restrict access to employees and visitors to restricted areas. This is done using a central computer system that is designed to recognize what card the magnetic reader is reading. I then gains access to a database that tells it to allow/disallow entrance to the area. Every Proximity Cards have and a micro chip that is programmed to contain and track various types of information. Every device is uniquely encoded to control access to the area where it is needed and more importantly not needed. Some cards/devices can have custom magnetically programmed information that will allow the user to swipe their card if need be.

HID offers a wide range of secure access devices. They have key fob devices the 1346 ProxKey III that can be attached to a key ring. They make a tag with an adhesive backing, the 1391 MicroProx Tag, this allows users to place the tag on an existing ID Card. The 1386 ISOProx II card offers proximity technology with photo identification capability on a single card. The 1326 ProxCard II is a traditional proximity card. The DuoProx II card combines multiple technologies: proximity, magnetic stripe and photo identification technologies on a single access control card.

    Desktop and Portable External Hard Drives?

    An external hard drive is the same type of hard drive as you would find inside a PC or laptop, except that it is mounted in a separate enclosure. It can be used to store information (data) permanently or temporarily, in the same way as a computer’s hard drive.

    External hard drives (the actual drive itself) come in two main sizes (physical size), 2.5″ and 3.5″. The 2.5″ drives are the same as you would find in a laptop computer, whereas the 3.5″ drives are identical to hard drives found in desktop PCs. The difference is in the interface that connects the external hard drive to your computer.

    Usually, external hard drives connect to the computer via a USB/Firewire cable, most modern operating systems will automatically recognise the hard drive as a storage device, and assign it a drive letter.

    The fact that external hard drives are simply placed in an enclosure, means you can usually change the actual hard drive itself without too much effort. This allows you to swap drives between enclosures, so you only have to buy one enclosure for many drives (of the same type).

    There are two main types of external hard drives, portable and desktop

    Desktop Hard Drive – Desktop external hard drives are normally 3.5″ hard drives mounted in a larger enclosure than its portable counterpart. The enclosure may also have fans integrated to assist in keeping the drive cool during operation, which extends the life of the disk drive. The desktop external hard drive is designed with storage capacity in mind, rather than portability.

    Portable Hard Drive – Portable external hard drives are usually 2.5″ hard drives (laptop hard drives) in a slimline enclosure, making them easy to carry. Although they are portable, they are not unbreakable and extra care is needed while transporting them, for example, don’t put them in your back pocket and then sit down!

    Mini DV Tape – Still a Safe, Reliable Favorite

    While solid state memory cameras have entered the video camera market in force, Mini DV Tape is still the most used video camera media. It allows high quality video with HD formatting and is an easy to use inexpensive and reliable way to shoot your professional or home movies.

    Panasonic came out with a new version of its highly successful PQ series, the PQUS series, and the newer tape that has fewer dropouts and is better suited for use in today’s HD cameras. Sony has released a new HD line of Tapes the HDM63VG series and DVM63HD series tapes are also designed to maximize the performance of your Mini Dv Cameras. TDK continues to make their reliable workhorse tape the DVM60.

    While many of the new SD Card and solid state drive cameras are of high quality, they gave yet to produce an inexpensive way to capture the quality for the cost of Mini DV. Hard drives or memory cards for your camera can cost upwards of $300 and you can generally only shoot 1 to 2 hours of video.
