What is the difference between Sony’s Mini DV Tapes?

We have a lot of questions regarding the difference between Sony mini dv tapes and we wanted to set the recored straight Sony has 4 grades of Mini DV tapes, the Premium Series(PR,) Videographers grade(VG,) the High Definition(HD) consumer grade tape.

The Sony Premium Series Mini DV Tape DVM60PRR Digital Video Cassettes is a 60 minute tape.  It is a metal evaporated tape, with a carbon coating layer, that increases durability and prevents dropout.  Sony Premium Mini DV Tape is also available in an 80 Minute Length. This tape great for all around use by anyone in any Mini DV or HD Mini DV camera.

Sony’s professional videographer grade (VG) tape for MiniDV and HDV recording is the HDM63VG. It allows recording and play back at 1080p or 720i HD and uses single layer AME II technology that allows for cleaner playback. The HDM-63VG brings you the best of both worlds. A Sony professional grade tape that is fully engineered to perform in the demanding HDV mode, yet as affordable as consumer grade media! This new tape provides the product quality, consistency and integrity that Sony puts into its entire professional media line of products.

Sony’s DVM-63HD HD DVC tape offers the highest quality recording media for the consumer or prosumer making the step-up to an HD camcorder. It is the recommended media for Sony’s new HDR-FX1 prosumer camcorder. Independent film makers, advertising agencies, and other videographers will appreciate the improved image quality, and the professional 63 minute tape duration. It like the VG series uses AME II technology. The DVM-63HD features 90% fewer errors and 50% fewer dropouts compared to DV Reference tape (tested on standard Sony DV VCR). Get the good stuff… go for High Definition.

Now that you know the differnce choose wisely!
